Gregory Lind Gallery is proud to present Sarah Walker's new exhibition, "Beacons, Floaters and Lost Objects." Walker's pieces are continuations of her interest in using painting as a tool for perceptual recalibration that enables viewers to detect and intuit disparate spatial systems simultaneously. Walker's complex, lattice-like structures (suggestive of everything from cellular composition to microchips) utilize patterns that can be found in the physical sciences, nature, and architecture. The internal logic of Walker's imagery unfolds over multiple viewings and through successive layers, forming a moiré effect on the mind.
In Walker's new pieces, acrylic drawings on paper and paintings on panel, images that hint at geological activity are fused with grids that suggest urban plans. Sinking archipelagos are juxtaposed against monumental architectural projections, while seemingly digital realities intersect to perplex the overall topography. In Walker's large-scale piece, Signalscape, 2008, measuring 70" by 90", intricate geometric diagrams cut across multi-hued, layered passages that loom like abstract descriptions of weather patterns. Super-saturated grids of lines, circles, and crumbling blueprints seem to stand in as symbols of natural processes. All of these rudimentary shapes, which resemble rays of sunlight, thunderstorms, and glaciers, work to further Walker's investment in the multiplicity of natural and technological processes, from the things that we see to the things that are imperceptible.
These are paintings that indicate a dialogue between an improvisational working process and slow, meticulous analysis. Dense accretions of information enable Walker's objects to exist suspended in a state of perpetual transformation. Walker's works combine the cool functions of technology with the more randomized procedures of nature. The manner in which the work depicts expanded space and collapsed time seems to allude to a cosmic consciousness that contains creation and destruction concurrently. These are works suspended between complexity, chaos, super-saturation, and serenity, in which new realities are continuously under construction.
Sarah Walker received her BFA from California College of the Arts and an MFA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Recent exhibitions include Collidescape, Pierogi, Brooklyn, as well as the following group exhibitions: Midnight Full of Stars, Visual Art Center of New Jersey, Summit, NJ; Future Tense: Reshaping the Landscape at the Neuberger Museum, Purchase, NY; and Big Bang! Abstract Painting for the 21st Century, DeCordova Museum, Lincoln, MA. Walker's collections include Museum of Modern Art, Milwaukee Art Museum, Neuberger Museum, and DeCordova Museum. She has been written about in publications such as the Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times and San Francisco Chronicle. This will be Sarah Walker's third solo exhibition at Gregory Lind Gallery.
