ARTISTS: Daniel Turner
Daniel Turner
Daniel Turner's broad range of practices include painting, sculpture, photography, and site-specific installations. Forming the basis for much of his work is the consideration of presence or absence, both in history and the present. His works are a dichotomy – a blend of caustic materials (ranging from soot, vinyl, liquid aluminum and kerosene) on or encased between surfaces that remain formally reflective and eloquent. Turner's work often projects a sensual yet calming severity, providing the viewer with neither physical nor psychological solace.
Turner was born in Portsmouth, VA and received his BFA in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute. He has been the subject of solo and group exhibitions including Wall Space Gallery, New York, NY; Recess Activities, New York, NY; West Street Gallery, New York, NY; Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, VA; Hermitage Foundation Museum, Norfolk, VA; Jericho Ditch, Isle of Wight, VA; Gregory Lind Gallery, San Francisco, CA; Walter and McBean Gallery, San Francisco, CA; Boulevard es Brezsnyev Gallery, Budapest, Hungary; Preteen Gallery, Hermosillo, Mexico; Ve.sch, Vienna, Austria; and Styx Project, Berlin, Germany. He is the recipient of several major grants from The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and has participated in residencies through the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and New York University. Turner is the co-founder of the artist collective “Jules Marquis.” He currently lives and works in New York.
